Ball mills used to produce explosive mixtures such as black powder should never be operated inside buildings inhabited by people. They require a separate facility away from buildings and flammable substances and protected from the public with a suitable defence wall or barricade made of something with some mass to absorb possible fragments from the exploding ball mill.

I followed Ned''s article on Skylighter when I ball mill, but being a noob, not sure if I should stick to this process or not. I use 6" PVC jars filled with a 20oz charge, mill for one hour, then use it for burst, lift, etc. So far, only milling for one hour works fine for lifting my 4" shells(i use 1.75oz) as well as coating the rice hulls for

If you have a hex shaped drum, use it. If you’re using the ball mill to mix black powder, then you might want to use the porcelain black powder mill balls purchased from a gun shop.

in many situations it was 10:1, for effective ball milling conditions you can go up to 20:1. But efficiency of ball milling depends upon many factors like Ball dia, PCA used, Rotational speed

Have not made black powder since I was, oh, 12. I have a Harbor Freight tumbler with its two rubber chambers suitable for milling BP. (I don''t use the small rubber chambers for brass cleaning as I built a larger chamber from 4" PVC that holds more and is easier to seal and open.) Some say "ball mill the BP ingredients using lead balls."

You can always rewet the powder and regranulate it. Many people use water to wet the powder for granulation. I use pure alcohol. It will dry in a matter of hours. Water can take three of four days to dry enough to use. The 5/8''s full is to give room for the balls to do their cascade, your better at 1/2 full.

What I did when I didnt have a ball mill was get a small tub and put media in it with the black powder, I would then shake the living shit out of it for half an hour. Surprisingly it actually worked quite well, i granulated it and it was pretty good. If you have a paint shaker or something like that use it.
This article on choosing milling media for a ball mill by Ned Gorski is a side article that goes with the "Ball Milling 101" article.Milling Media Cautions. In his book Ball Milling Theory and Practice for the Amateur Pyrotechnician, Lloyd includes a section on casting your own lead media.
"Black powder is and isn''t hard to make depending on which end you look at it from. It is a long and tiresome task if you make more than ten pounds at a time. "Out on the West Coast, as in some southern states, the trend by the government is to prevent its sale with mountains of red tape. Making your own black powder, however, is not unlawful as

3. When you open your mill, you should find an incredibly fine black/greyish powder. Sieve this to get the media of the mill out, and weigh it. In a separate container, place 75 grams of potassium nitrate for every 25 grams of charcoal/sulfur powder you have. Put the potassium nitrate in your ball mill, and mill it for 3 hours.

Meal powder is a side product of milling high-quality black powder. It is also a mixture of potassium nitrate , charcoal and sulfur in the correct proportions (75:15:10) which has been ball milled to mix it intimately. It is used in the same way as commercial meal powder or can be pressed and corned to produce true black powder .
A better way is to mill the powder, which better combines the three ingredients. As described below, I used a rock tumbler as a ball mill to accomplish this. Black powder consists of three primary components, measured by weight: Potassium nitrate (KNO3) – 75% by weight: an oxidizer, the KNO3 supplies oxygen for the reaction. Charcoal – 15%
The image above shows a pulverizing drum (ball mill) from the nineteenth century. This particular model was in common use in France. The ingredient to be ground was put in, along with an equal weight of brass balls and then then drum was rotated at about 20 revolutions per minute.
This article borrows from Lloyd''s research, which was obtained from the commercial ball milling industry, and explains some of the key design criteria for making your own ball mill. This is a good starting point for anyone interested in making their own black powder, which is the foundation upon which all other pyrotechnics have been built.

Ball mills are also used in pyrotechnics and the manufacture of black powder, but cannot be used in the preparation of some pyrotechnic mixtures such as flash powder because of their sensitivity to impact.
The Explosion of a Ball Milling Jar The sound of the other shoe (1997) By Lloyd E. I generally use the traditional ratio of 75 parts potassium nitrate, 15 parts charcoal and 10 parts sulfur. If your black powder is intended primarily for use as lift powder, you might want to use the ratio which is purported to be optimized for this purpose. It is 74 parts potassium nitrate, 14 parts charcoal and 12 parts sulfur.
I''ve made black powder using a little Lortone polisher that I originally puchased for my daughter, but only once. My milling media consisted of about 30 .50 Cal rifle balls, and the charge of black power was only about 3-oz. When I went out to check the machine in the morning, after about 18 hours of milling, it was too hot to touch,
The ball mill is a tumbling mill that uses steel balls as the grinding media. The length of the cylindrical shell is usually 1–1.5 times the shell diameter (Figure 8.11).The feed can be dry, with less than 3% moisture to minimize ball coating, or slurry containing 20–40% water by weight.
